With 30 years of executive experience, John Lyons brings unrivalled knowledge in stadium and major venue/events operations in Australia, as well as a strong background in managing government, corporate and community stakeholders. John's approach to major projects combines a keen strategic mindset with a strong focus on people and long-term value.
As the Chief Operating Officer of South Australia's leading sports body (South Australian National Football League), John guided the business through the most dynamic period of its history. Over 36 months, he successfully led the League through a high-profile transition to a new international-standard venue [Adelaide Oval), the transfer of two AFL licenses and a significant internal restructure.
As interim COO [2009-2011) leading the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval, John was engaged in every facet of the project from vision to completion. This included his direction in project design, tendering and construction, operational budgets, membership and ticketing modelling, stakeholder engagement and catering operations for an international-standard multi-sports venue.
Key to John's management experience is his capacity to generate lasting value across an asset's lifespan. In maintaining the commercial viability of the 40-year-old AAMI Stadium, he led major redevelopment works including the construction of the Northern Grandstand and internalized a highly successful catering operation generating $15m per annum.
One of the strongest features of John's leadership style is his unwavering focus on staff and stakeholder engagement, working both as an instigator of exceptional business relationships and a dedicated developer of high-performing teams. While managing an employee base of 60 FT and 1500 casuals, John also developed wide-ranging professional external relationships within major sporting bodies; national media; local, state and federal governments; and top-tier Australian corporations.
John was appointed to the Board of Safety Wise in June 2017.
