Are You Prepared For When An Incident Occurs?

Late last week I received a phone call that anyone with elderly parents would dread receiving- my 86yo father had taken a fall and had hurt himself and was being taken to hospital.

Following numerous x-rays and scans, it was confirmed that he had a wedge fracture of the T3 and would require a brace for 3 months or so, along with rehab and other support.

Knowing dad, he'll fight like hell to get through this and overcome it- this is a guy who has had three elbow replacements and numerous other issues due to arthritis and continues to fight through the pain and discomfort.

Having said that, I couldn't help but think about this from a workplace point of view.

Is your workplace prepared for when an incident occurs?

Simple things like who calls for assistance through to who contacts family for example.

But it also encapsulates more serious questions such as known allergies, pre-existing conditions, known medications and similar (and I don't want to get into a debate or advise against differing legislation around privacy and similar concerns).

We must acknowledge that despite our best efforts, things can happen in the workplace that results in an incident that requires medical intervention. It doesn't even have to be an injury related to work- it could be a heart attack for example that is totally unrelated to the activities being undertaken.
